Gun Owners in Virginia have a clear choice for U.S. Senate this year.  On one side, there is former Governor Tim Kaine, who while saying he supports the Second Amendment, has a clear record of opposing laws that would have made it easier for Virginia citizens to exercise their right to self-defense.  While Kaine signed some legislation supported by gun owners when he was governor, he twice vetoed legislation to allow carrying concealed handguns in restaurants like Applebees and Olive Garden that serve alcohol in addition to food.  He also vetoed legislation that would have allowed a person who may lawfully possess a firearm to carry a handgun in a private motor vehicle or boat if the handgun is locked in a container or compartment.  Both pieces of legislation were signed into law by Governor McDonnell last year.

Kaine also vetoed legislation that would have allowed active duty service members of the United States Armed Forces or the Virginia National Guard to purchase more than one handgun within a 30-day period, legislation that would have required localities operating compensated confiscation schemes (so-called gun buy-backs) to sell by public auction, or sealed bids, to a person licensed as a dealer, any firearms acquired through the schemes.

Finally, Kaine vetoed legislation that made it clear that the training required to apply for a concealed handgun permit could be completed online or other electronic format.  Fortunately, the House and Senate overrode that veto.

George Allen on the other hand signed Virginia’s “shall issue” concealed carry reform into law when he was governor.  He also supported repeal of Virginia’s gun rationing law known as “one gun-a-month” when it was before the General Assembly this year.  Tim Kaine opposed repeal.

Now is the time for all gun owners to do everything they can to insure that the pro-rights Jim Webb is not replaced with the anti-rights Tim Kaine.  Contact the Allen campaign today to see how you can help.

It is no real surprise that the Washington Post overstates the number of guns sold in the U.S. that wind up being used by the drug cartels in Mexico. The Heritage Foundation did a great job of setting the record straight.
Hat tip to NRANews.

It has been a long time since I posted here.  I have converted this blog to more of an election news site as part of my efforts as an NRA-ILA Election Volunteer Coordinator.  As we are just beginning to kick off Campaign 2010, there is an exciting event coming up that I am urging all gun owners to attend – The Second Amendment March.  There will be a national march on April 19 in Washington D.C. as well as local marches in all 50 states on various dates.  The Virginia March is scheduled to take place at the State Capitol on April 12th.

I know these events are on Mondays but the Virginia March is scheduled around lunch time so if you can attend either of these marches it is important to show our support for our right to keep and bear arms.

In July, the Sussex County Planning Commission unanimously passed a proposal to require “pistol and sporting clays ranges” in A-1 zoning areas to apply for and receive a conditional use permit before opening for operation.  A public hearing of the Sussex County Board of Supervisors (BOS) was held on August 20, 2009 and the BOS unanimously sent the proposal back to the planning commission to “clearly define the terms ‘sporting clays fields and pistol ranges in Sussex County.”

The Planning Commission has now resubmitted the proposal to the Sussex BOS and a public hearing will be held at 7:00PM Thursday November 19.  Your attendance is needed to defeat this proposal.  It should be noted that the planning commission is the originator of this proposal, not the BOS.

This is becoming an all to familiar story. While existing ranges Airfield Shooting Club and Sussex Shooting Sports may be grandfathered in by the proposal, approval of the recommendation may mean that future additions to existing clubs and ranges may require them to apply for a permit. This will impact numerous groups that need shooting facilities in the county like Boy Scouts, 4H, NRA Events (i.e. Women on Target Clinics etc), to name a few.

If you are a gun owner living in Sussex County or shoot competitively at a club currently located in Sussex County, it is important that you attend this public hearing and oppose the proposal.

The Virginia Shooting Sports Association (VSSA) is in the process of obtaining a copy of the current proposal that will be considered.  When the planning commission  forwards a copy as promised, it will be posted on the VSSA blog.

What: Public Hearing on Shooting Ranges in Sussex County
Where: Sussex County General District Courtroom, 15080 Courthouse Road, Sussex, VA 23884
When: 7:00 PM

Be sure to attend this meeting.
