Philip Bump writes for the Washington Post’s The Fix.  In this piece from earlier today, Bump notes that all those tweets on Twitter (and I might add the front page of the New York Daily News)  that took GOP congressmen to task for offering condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the San Bernardino shooting were missing the point.  You see, the meme is that offering prayers was a hollow jester when they had the power to pass gun control had it not been for all the money they received from he NRA (even though it appears from what we know that no laws were broken in the acquisition of the firearms used).  Bump focused on ThinkProgress’s Igor Volsky’s tweets that listed the NRA contributions to various congressmen who tweeted prayers and noted that Volsky missed the real point.

Especially when the donor is contributing a tiny fraction of everything the candidate received. The power of the NRA lies in the cause they advocate. Gun rights has a strong base of support, and one that votes heavily Republican. The NRA didn’t need to give Goodlatte a dime, and his reaction to San Bernardino would likely have been the same.

The L.A. Times reports that when President Obama returns to his hometown of Chicago on Tuesday to address the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference, that he will use the platform to push for gun control:

Obama will talk about the need for tougher gun laws with police chiefs gathered in Chicago on Tuesday, aides say, as part of a broader conversation about violence and how police can work more effectively with their communities to combat it.

He’s traveling to Chicago simply because that’s the site of the annual gathering of the International Assn. of Chiefs of Police, but advisors say he’s well aware of the symbolism in returning to his hometown amid this debate.

Obama will have a receptive ear as many big city chiefs are in favor of gun control and the IACP has in the past endorsed such policies as banning modern sporting rifles.  Obama’s remarks come however at a time when multiple polls of the public show Americans oppose stricter gun laws or that addressing mental health issues are more important.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe will not be running for reelection this November, but his hopes are high for his legislative agenda. According to WTOP, McAuliffe has made it a priority for Democrats to become the majority in the Senate, allowing him to pursue his gun control proposals. I had the chance earlier this week to talk about the WTOP article and this year’s election with NRANews’ Cam and Company host Cam Edwards, where I noted Democrats need only two more seats in the Senate for a clear majority, and only one with Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam as the tie-breaking vote. Six races are considered to be competitive this year. Because it is the state association affiliate of the NRA, VSSA is urging Virginia gun owners to visit the NRA-PVF website, and cast their votes for candidates that support the Second Amendment.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun ban group Mayors Against Illegal Guns is launching a campaign in states with senators considered to be persuadable on a package of gun control legislation making its way to the Senate floor in April.  Bloomberg confirmed on today’s Meet the Press that he plans to spend $12 million to run ads in at least 10 states.  He is trying to make them believe there will be a political price to pay for opposing gun control.   The ads are more of the recent attempts to drive a wedge between segments of gun owners and the NRA with the ads featuring what are supposed to be hunters who support gun control.  This from Fox News:

In one ad, the man says he’ll defend the Second Amendment but adds “with rights come responsibilities.” The ad then urges viewers to tell Congress to support background checks.

In the other ad, the man, a hunter, is shown with the rifle and children playing in the background.

“I believe in the Second Amendment, and I’ll fight to protect it. But with rights come responsibilities,” he says. “That’s why I support comprehensive background checks.”

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, who also appeared on the program was not impressed:

“He can’t spend enough of his $27 billion to try to impose his will on the American public,” LaPierre said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He can’t buy America.”

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam went further:

“What Michael Bloomberg is trying to do is … intimidate senators into not listening to constituents and instead pledge their allegiance to him and his money,” said spokesman Andrew Arulanandam.
Bloomberg all but admitted this is nothing but exploitation of the Newtown shooting and its victims:

Bloomberg defended the ad buy Sunday , speaking on the same program as LaPierre, saying it would be a “great tragedy” if the momentum for gun control generated after the Newtown mass shooting withered. At the same time, Bloomberg said “I think we are going to win this.”

We was blunt about the purpose of the ad buys. “We’re trying to do everything we can to press upon the senators this is what the survivors want.”

We need to keep the pressure up on our U.S. Senators.  Both Mark Warner and Tim Kaine cast their first anti-rights votes this past Friday when they voted against an amendment that would prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty in order to uphold the Second Amendment.

Sebastian over at Shall Not Be Questioned has coverage of today’s Senate Judiciary Hearing on Diane Feinstein’s bill banning so-called “assault weapons.”

It appears from most of the coverage I’ve read, the comment of the day was Feinstein referring to our rights as “personal pleasures.” Sebastian picked up on that too.

He also noted that the fact the anti-rights folks in attendance were overtly rude to the pro-rights witnesses may be an indication that we are winning on this issue.

I echo Sebastian’s call to keep up your contacts with your legislators.

It’s been a while since I have updated this site but with Campaign 2012 heating up, look for more activity and information related to election activities for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.  In the meantime, I’ll be in St. Louis this weekend covering the NRA Annual Meeting and will provide periodic updates.  More frequent updates on this weekend’s activities can be found at the VSSA blog.

NRO’s Jim Geraghty has a quick post about the event here.  Reports put the crowd at 10,000 – 20,000.  This may be based on tickets given away to the event but it continues a trend began on August 29th when McCain announced the choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate.
