An editorial in yesterday’s NY Times lamented that the shootings of a decade ago at Columbine, two years ago at VA Tech, and last week in Binghamton haven’t resulted in tougher gun control.  NRA was once again trotter out as the reason, sighting the organization’s “intimidation” tactics against congressmen and the Times urged the President to “place the immense persuasive powers of his office behind an across-the-board, badly overdue push for sensible gun control”.  Never mind the fact that a recent Gallup poll showed that  support for gun control is at an all time low.

NRA’s Wayne LaPierre has been warning us of this for several years.

Many gun owners likely considered it one more ploy to raise money.  But the Obama Administration has all but confirmed that LaPierre was right with a new focus on ending a supposedly deadly flow of “assault weapons” to Mexico.

The Washington Times is right– it hasn’t worked with drugs and gangs flowing out of Mexico and I doubt the gang bangers they migrate to do their bidding here will find this new focus on guns a deterance to what they do.

It appears that House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer may be putting the DC Voting Rights Act on the back burner to simmer – signaling that DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton’s attempt to extort pro-rights supporters to abandon basic constitutional rights for DC residents through a threat of a bad “Civil Rights” rating for not voting for “clean” bill free of a gun rights amendment, has failed. Hoyer has not signaled that he is completely giving up – saying he expects a bill to pass and be signed by the president by the end of the year – he apparently is just adjusting his timetable to later rather than sooner.

In her letter to the “Blue Dogs” Norton claims that racism is to blame for members of her own party historically opposing “Home Rule” for residents of DC. Scream racism when all else fails.

I’m not going to get in to what people I did not know were thinking 30, 50 or 150 years ago.  I think we can all agree we have some things in our nation’s history that most people today are not proud of – things that were products of the times in which they occurred.  What I do know is Norton and those pushing for a D.C .member in the House conveniently forget that Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution explicitly states:

The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States…(emphasis added)

D.C. is a frigging federal district – a city – NOT A STATE!!! So is it asking too much that if we are going to violate the Constitution to give D.C. representation in the House, that we should at least recognize the right of self defense that is enshrined in the Bill of Rights?

Last week the blogosphere was all abuzz with talk about question number 59 on the Obama Employment Questionnaire.  That is the question asking prospective administration employees

“Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun?  If so, provide complete ownership and registration information.  Has the registration ever lapsed?  Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”

Jake Tapper, ABC News’ Senior White House Correspondent, referred to the questionnaire this morning on his blog as a list of “intrusive and extensive” questions.

Cam Edwards covered the topic extensively on his Thursday and Friday shows and NRA’s Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre was interviewed by NRA News‘ Ginny Simone about what has become known as “question #59.”  Tapper writes that South Carolina Congressman Jim Demint has also jumped into the fray saying,

“I am deeply disturbed that President-elect Obama is asking job applicants whether they or members of their family own guns. Millions of law-abiding Americans own firearms and they should not be discriminated against. The questionnaire already seeks information about illegal activity so there is no reason to ask this question unless the Obama Administration plans to use it to discriminate based on lawful activity. For this reason, I will seek to enact legislation to prohibit this type of discrimination.”

Is this much to-do about nothing?  Obama’s minions say yes.  They told Tapper that the question is not about discriminating against gun owners, but is meant to insure anyone with a gun has one within the “parameters of the law.”  They compare question #59 to the one about whether the prospective employee has had run-ins with the law over any law or regulation, or ever gotten a traffic ticket of more than $50 in fines.

Bill Bennett’s guest host this morning, Kevin Wall, said the questionnaire is a way for the Obama transition team to make sure they don’t run into the problems that Clinton ran into to with some of his nominees in the first term.

Forgive me it I think something else is afoot.  Obama has shown a disdain for guns and gun owners his entire public life.  This is just one more reason not to trust the guy when it comes to our gun rights.

Another local Richmond television station (WRIC TV8) ran a segment last night on gun sales – this time the angle is the run is a by-product of the Obama election victory.  Before the stories were how people were preparing for a possible Obama win.  Gun owner fears were correct – yesterday the Official Transistion web site went live and under “Agenda” you will find a section on “Urban Policy” and under that section you will find a section on “Crime and Law Enforcement.”  That section states:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn’t have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.

ABC Nightline ran a segment last night on the surge in gun sales as a reaction by gun owners to the Obama Victory.

AR-15s appear to be in short supply according to the story.  They also had to take the “drive-by” swipe at the NRA saying the organization had scared gun owners into believing Obama was going to take our guns.  Shouldn’t expect anything less from the media.  Fact is NRA never said Obama was going to take our guns – they did warn that he would do everything he could to make it harder to buy new ones – guns like semi-auto firearms.  NRA was right.

I said Obama would try to strike while the iron was hot and it appears I was correct.

Gun Owners, we are in for a rough four years.

Update: A gun shop owner in Arizona was interviewed for a Reuters story and he shares my thoughts on this issue:

I’d rather that (Republican Sen. John) McCain got in and there’s not a big scare and we just followed our normal sales,” Chee told Reuters, rather than say right now we are going to make a lot of money for a few months, and then in a few months, possibly, our business could be shut down.

The Politico reports that the NRA is running a new add in battleground states, including Virginia, in hopes of closing the sale for gun owners to vote their rights on November 4th.  The ad does not mention a candidate by name but uses the popular actor Chuck Norris in ads reminiscent of the Huckabee primary ads.

This has been posted by several people already but since I received an email from an NRA member that does not understand why Mark Warner received the same grade as Jim Gilmore in the Virginia U.S. Senate race, I thought I would put my two cents worth in too.

First there is this video:

Yes, fourteen years ago, Mark Warner said a number of groups, including the NRA were threatening to what it means to be an American.

Then, in 1996, Mark Warner, while running for U.S. Senate against then U.S. Senator John Warner (no relation) said he supported the Clinton Gun Ban and in 2001 when running for Governor of Virginia, he could not answer with a simple yes or no whether the NRA was a positive force in Virginia. He stumbled and bumbled before saying he thought the NRA represented its members. He also said he would sign a bill banning firearms in local parks and recreation centers. Warner also said in 1996 that if he had been governor when Virginia’s “shall issue” concealed handgun law passed, he would not have signed it.

After winning the Governor’s race in 2001, Warner faced a strongly Republican and pro-gun General Assembly. During his four years in office, he saw a number of pro-gun bills come across his desk – including 17 in 2004. Among those bills, he signed a bill partially rolling back Virginia’s handgun rationing law – allowing concealed handgun permit holders (CHPs) to purchase more than one handgun in a 30 day period. Warner also signed Virginia’s full preemption law – repealing all local ordinances dealing with owning and purchasing firearms. There were also a number of bills further strengthening Virginia’s CHP statute. In short, Warner signed every bill that hit his desk – the two of real substance mentioned above and many that had little substance but that did advance the ball forwarded a yard or two for gun owners.

Having said this, given a choice between Jim Gilmore and Mark Warner, this gun owner will take Jim Gilmore any day of the week. Jim Gilmore has never said anything against gun owners or the NRA. Jim Gilmore is a life member of the NRA (he did not, like Mitt Romney, join a year before running for the office he sought). Jim Gilmore is also a member of the NRA Board of Directors.

This gun owner believes words mean things. Even though they were 14 years ago, the fact that Mark Warner thought gun owners were a threat to what he thought it meant to be an American says something about Mark Warner’s mindset. When he was Governor, he was not going to see a gun control bill and it would have been political suicide for him to veto bills that passed by veto proof margins. But Warner is one of those who equates gun rights with hunters and “sportsmen” – thus his original opposition to the CHP statute passed in 1995.

This gun owner does not for a minute believe that if Warner is in a U.S. Senate with a filibuster proof margin and Obama in the White House, that he will oppose one or more of Obama’s Supreme Court nominees – nominees that Obama himself has said would be like Justice Stephen Breyer or Justice Ruth Ginsburg – justices that were in the minority in the Heller decision and who believe the meaning of the Constitution changes with the whims of public opinion. I also do not believe that Warner has changed his true opinion of the Clinton Gun Ban.

And the federal courts, not just the Supreme Court, are a huge concern to this gun owner and voter. The next president will have extraordinary impact on the ideological shape of the nation’s federal courts for decades to come. It is likely the next president will appoint Supreme Court judges as six of the nine are turning 70. In addition, hundreds of federal and appellate judges will be appointed.  Appellate appointments shape lasting constitutional interpretations and they cover multiple states. Although these require Congressional approval, that will be a slam-dunk if this election creates a Democratic super-majority. One out of three federal judges now owes a lifetime-tenured job to the current president.

The overwhelming majority of Americans believe that judges should interpret the law as it is written. Seventy-four percent (74%) of men favor that approach along with 65% of women. Sen. McCain supports that view and he has consistently campaigned on a “strict constructionist philosophy” for the courts.

Sen. Obama, on the other hand, believes that judges should be required to possess “empathy” and should “reach decisions on the basis of his deepest values, core concerns, and broader perspectives on how the world works.” During the Roberts nomination debate, Sen. Obama stated, “Legal process alone will not lead you to a rule of decision. In those difficult cases, the critical ingredient is supplied by what is in the judge’s heart.”

My sources at NRA Federal Affairs – the division that rates candidates – says that Warner’s pro-gun record while he was Governor, and the fact he answered the questions on the questionnaire to NRA’s satisfaction, is why he received the same rating as Jim Gilmore. I am told the questionnaire included a question on the Clinton Gun Ban and on judicial appointments. I suspect like in 2001, that is all Warner was hoping for – to keep NRA neutral so he could tell voters in rural areas that since they have nothing to fear from him on the gun issue, they can focus on other issues like the economy.

Gun owners have to judge for themselves if they want Warner to be the 60th vote that will allow every anti-gun court appointment from a President Obama to make it to the bench.

This from the NRA-PVF web site:

Fairfax, VA. – The National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, and NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) Chairman Chris W. Cox are traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., Springfield, Mo., Colorado Springs, Colo. and Reno, Nev. today for a series of press conferences endorsing Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin for President and Vice President respectively in the November 4 election.

“John McCain has more than two decades of pro-gun and pro-hunting votes in Congress. He has stood time and again to preserve our Second Amendment freedom and our rich hunting heritage,” said LaPierre. “Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin have earned the NRA-PVF’s endorsement and we will encourage gun owners, hunters and anyone who values freedom to vote McCain-Palin on November 4.”

“NRA members and gun owners will not allow Barack Obama to hide his radical record of opposition to our constitutional rights,” said Cox. “Obama has voted to make self-defense with a firearm in the home illegal, has voted to ban the most commonly owned hunting shotguns, has voted to ban commonly owned hunting ammunition, and has supported a 500% tax increase on guns and ammunition. We will remind voters every single time he pretends that his anti-gun record doesn’t exist.”

John McCain voted for the landmark Firearms Owners Protection Act and the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, opposed the failed Clinton Gun Ban, and voted against mandatory waiting periods, national gun registration, and bans on hunting ammunition. He also signed the historic congressional amicus brief in the case of Heller v. District of Columbia, holding that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms — a brief that Senator Obama refused to sign.

Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a hunter, gun owner and NRA Life Member. Gov. Palin has been a consistent and outspoken supporter of the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen.

Virginian Karl Rusch appears in an NRA ad targeting hunters urging them to defeat Obama on November 4th.

His son, former Marine Staff Sgt. Kurt Rusch, a veteran of the Iraq war, appears in an ad targeting veterans, that talks about how they fought to protect the very freedom that Obama threatens.

Or is he just waiting until he has the votes in congress before doing what he would really like to do with respect to guns? Listen closely to his answer to a question he took at a Duryea, PA, glass factory.  After using the same tired code words of “gun safety” to describe ending private sales at gun shows, shutting down gun dealers as he proposed in 2000 and taking a swipe at the NRA, he lets slip what is the only thing that would keep a President Obama from doing what his record clearly shows he would like to do if he could.

Obama claims the NRA opposes “gun safety” measures but it is the NRA that has done more to promote real gun safety than any other organization – pro-rights or anti-rights. Through the Eddie Eagle program, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, millions of children have been taught the basic message that if you see a gun, “Stop, Don’t Touch, Leave the Area, Tell an Adult.” Through various other programs of the NRA, millions of new gun owners have learned the safe handling and use of a firearm.

It’s clear Barack Obama knows nothing about what is real gun safety and he is no friend of gun owners.
